IACUC seeks candidates for executive chair

UNMC’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) has decided to create the position of executive chair of the IACUC (ECI). The ECI will report administratively to the associate vice chancellor for academic affairs. All interested individuals are encouraged to apply. Survey supports UNMC research on chicken soup

As cold and flu season descends on the United States, a recently released national survey of 20,000 family physicians confirms what moms have known all along – eating chicken soup can help manage the misery of cold symptoms. The findings of the survey reaffirm research done earlier at UNMC that suggests chicken soup may contain a number of substances that can ease the symptoms of upper respiratory infections.

Team Kaos to cap successful year

Team Kaos will cap its 2002 season Sunday (Nov. 24) with the Nebraska State Cyclo Cross Championships. The team, sponsored by UNMC, NHS and UMA, will try to add another state championship to this year’s list of accomplishments. Sunday’s event will be at Standing Bear Lake.

NHS breaks ground on new building

UNMC’s partner, Nebraska Health System, broke ground Thursday on a four-story building that will physically unite two hospitals, two cultures and two histories.

The Center for Clinical Excellence will physically connect Clarkson Hospital and University Hospital allowing the consolidation of core medical services now spread across both campuses. Scheduled to open in May 2005, the building will house a new emergency room, surgical area, radiology department and neonatal intensive care unit.

NU president receives scientific freedom and responsibility award

For his steadfast support of academic freedom, L. Dennis Smith, Ph.D., president of the University of Nebraska, has been named to receive the highly coveted American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) 2002 Scientific Freedom and Responsibility Award. Dr. Smith will be honored for his commitment to scientific freedom and responsibility, as demonstrated in 1999, when medical research being conducted at UNMC came under fire.

Retired UNMC renal pathologist, Richard Wilson, dies

Richard B. Wilson, an emeritus professor of pathology and microbiology at UNMC, died Monday (Nov. 18) from complications after surgery. He was 81.
