From her 10th floor lab in the Lied Transplant Center, the petite crystallographer analyzes crystals, typically the size of a grain of sand, to map the structure of human proteins. NHS/UNMC launch the Nebraska Stroke Center
On Jan. 6, NHS and UNMC will introduce the “Nebraska Stroke Center,” the first of its kind in Nebraska and surrounding areas. With 750,000 new strokes occurring each year and demanding new approaches to stroke treatment, there is an increasing necessity for stroke centers.

Spirit of Hope Award given to Liz Karnes
October marked the fourth annual “Bouquet of Hope” program involving 20 florists in eight Nebraska communities. Sponsored by the Friends of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center, the program raised close to $2,000 for cancer research at UNMC — making 2002 the best year yet for the program’s efforts. Liz Karnes received this year’s “Spirit of Hope” award, which is given to someone who best personifies extraordinary courage and willingness to help other cancer patients.

Regent-elect Howard Hawks visits campus
Howard Hawks, who was recently elected to the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, recently spent three hours visiting with UNMC administrators and faculty members in an effort to learn more about the campus.

UNMC employees receive half day holiday on Dec. 24
Gov. Johanns has announced that all Nebraska state employees will have a half day holiday on Dec. 24 in conjunction with President Bush’s order that federal employees be “excused from duty for the last half of the scheduled workday” on Dec. 24.
In order to implement the governor’s order at UNMC, four hours will be considered paid administrative leave for all holiday eligible employees, and UNMC offices will be closed on the afternoon of Dec. 24.

Physicians receive Milagro Award
Four UNMC/NHS physicians received the prestigious Milagro Award last month from the Indian Chicano Health Center. They are Deb Romberger, M.D., pulmonary medicine, Jose Romero, M.D., pediatric infectious disease; John Spurzem, M.D., pulmonary medicine and Susanna Von Essen, M.D., pulmonary medicine and sleep disorders.
Five years ago the doctors created, and now operate, a tuberculosis clinic at the Indian Chicano Health Center — a clinic for prevention and treatment of the disease.
