Clinical psychologist cultivates minds

Keith Allen, Ph.D., isn’t likely to give the pre-doctoral interns that he mentors a lot of answers when discussing intervention strategies for patients. Instead, the UNMC clinical psychologist seeks to cultivate the future psychologists’ minds with in-depth dialogue and thought about why specific treatments are effective. Deb Vetter and her staff review approximately 700 grants and contracts per year, of which approximately 400 are awarded. Vetter admits it’s a high-stress, detail-oriented task, but one she finds rewarding and challenging as director of UNMC’s Sponsored Programs.

Faculty to be recognized for service at annual meeting

Almost 40 faculty members who have served 10, 20 or 30 years at UNMC will be recognized at the Annual Faculty Meeting on Monday, March 31, at 4 p.m. in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. More than 40 faculty who have served five years will receive a certificate via mail and will be recognized in the annual meeting program. A reception, hosted by UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., will follow the meeting at approximately 5 p.m. in the private dining rooms. See story for complete list of faculty who have served five, 10, 20 or 30 years.

Patient simulator joins UNMC nursing faculty

The UNMC College of Nursing has two life-sized mannequins — the only two in the state — designed to simulate patient conditions. Similar to real life, the patient blinks, responds to medication and can be given an IV or tracheotomy. He can even be programmed to talk.

AMA works toward medical liability reform

Without medical liability reform, Nebraska could face the same decrease in physician services that has plagued such states as Nevada, Florida, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, said Donald Palmisano, M.D., J.D., president-elect of the American Medical Association (AMA). He was on campus Tuesday for a luncheon hosted by the UNMC medical student and resident sections of the AMA.
