With more than 150 team members dressed in matching red T-shirts, the UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center team showed strong support for the 2003 Komen Nebraska Race for the Cure on Sunday. The Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC Eppley Cancer Center also was a bronze sponsor of the event.

Energy conservation project to begin Oct. 13

Beginning the week of Oct. 13, an energy conservation project will begin in the College of Nursing and will proceed at later dates in the College of Pharmacy and the Eppley Science Hall. The project will involve the replacement and/or repair of existing lighting fixtures.

Today, UNMC kicks off its United Way campaign with a goal of $125,000. Campaign contributions, which can be made through UNMC’s payroll deduction, help support more than 145 health and human service programs across the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Bellevue metropolitan areas.

A growing number of students are participating in Doing GREAT – an acronym for Graduating with Resources, Education, Awareness and Training. The program allows high school students to assist children ages 3 to 21 with developmental disabilities.

Scientists reach consensus on key scientific issues related to perchlorate

The 2003 Perchlorate State-of-the-Science Symposium concluded Wednesday in Omaha, with leading scientists verbally presenting their consensus reports on some of the most recent scientific studies on perchlorate. The significance of these results is that it questions the basic assumptions of a number of recent and influential government efforts to assess the safe level of perchlorate exposure.

System designed to prepare community in case of disaster

In recent years, terrorism has become an everyday threat in the United States. As a result, many agencies and organizations have formed disaster plans in the event of a weapons of mass destruction event. One of these organizations, the Omaha Metropolitan Medical Response System (OMMRS) has worked since 1998 to prepare the medical community in case such an event occurs.

Emergency medicine residency formed at UNMC

UNMC has formed a residency program in emergency medicine, and the new program should benefit the emergency care of citizens across Nebraska and the region. The first six physicians of the UNMC Emergency Medicine Residency Program will begin their three-year residencies in July 2004.

Despite state budget cuts, UNMC continues to grow

UNMC has budgeted $360 million for 2003-2004 to fund instruction, research and public service and to support academic, student, institutional and facilities services. The 2003-2004 UNMC operating budget, up from $345 million in 2002-2003, has been balanced and loaded into the SAP financial management system.

UNMC’s fall enrollment grows

UNMC reported a 1.6 percent increase in its headcount enrollment for fall 2003. Overall, 2,865 students enrolled at UNMC, compared to 2,819 last fall. See story for the enrollment report (available in a PDF).
