Gov. Mike Johanns announced a plan Tuesday to advance Nebraska’s efforts in bioterrorism preparedness. The goal of the plan is to combine private and public funding to construct a bioterrorism preparedness facility at UNMC.

Mail Services doing best to deliver through the snow

A near-record amount of snow covers the ground in Omaha, a fact that isn’t lost on Mary Bennie or the other employees of Mail Services. “Our mobility has been limited because of the snow,” said Bennie, who manages Mail Services for UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center. “We’re doing the best that we can, but our services are dependent on how bad the weather conditions are. There will be some delays in gathering and delivering mail.”

Hypertension expert to give Feb. 5 Latta Lecture

An expert in hypertension and cholesterol lowering agents, especially in minority populations, will give Thursday’s John S. Latta Lectureship, sponsored by the UNMC College of Medicine Alumni Association. “Dr. Wright is a giant in doing longitudinal large-scale studies involving the African American population,” said Rubens Pamies, M.D., vice-chancellor for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies.

National Biosecurity Center for Rural Health to form at UNMC

A new national biosecurity center headquartered at UNMC will focus on improving rural health. Funding for the National Biosecurity Center for Rural Health came from a $1 million appropriation in 2004 Omnibus Appropriation Bill approved last week by the U.S. Congress. President George W. Bush signed the bill Friday.
