UNMC, Douglas County Attorney’s Office unite in L.E.A.D.
UNMC is collaborating with the Douglas County Attorney’s Office (DCA), the Omaha medical community and First National Bank to develop a nationally acclaimed youth education program in Omaha. First started in California, the “Legal Enrichment and Decision Making” (LEAD) project is directed toward preventive education in health and legal issues for middle school children.

MMI’s Arts for Hearts show, silent auction May 11-12
The Fourth Annual Arts for Hearts Show and Silent Auction on May 11-12 will benefit Munroe-Meyer Institute’s Recreation Therapy Program (MMIRTP). The show features works created by children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities who participate in various MMIRTP programs, along with local professional artists.

McGoogan Library staff host Fontenelle students
For the past five years, the UNMC McGoogan Library of Medicine has been a major supporter of the Fontenelle Elementary School library. Initially, the staff sponsored Fontenelle under the Adopt-A-School program, but in 2000, staff members focused their interests on assisting the school’s library.

Alienation in the Indian nation is April 18 talk
On Monday, Lisa Prue Spellman, writer and editorial assistant in UNMC’s Public Affairs Department and a Lakota Sioux from the Rosebud Tribe of South Dakota, will offer her reflections on the Red Lake incident and its now historic place in the on-going struggle against alienation and cultural breakdown among America’s Native Americans.

Cytotechnologists – finding disease in life’s building blocks
Regardless of whether a patient engages the health system through an emergency room, family physician, or community clinic, one thing is certain – at some point the attending health professional is going to order lab tests. If so, many of the specimens taken will be sent to a cytotechnologist.

In what may be the ultimate “family affair,” Omaha Police Chief Thomas Warren and Brenda Council – brother and sister – will make a joint presentation Monday, Jan. 17 on the UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center campus to commemorate the 2005 Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

UNMC students solicit supplies, donations for medical missions
During the 2005 college spring break, many students will be homeward bound or headed for fun in the sun. But five groups of health science students — members of the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Student Alliance for Global Health (SAGH) — will spend spring break on medical missions to clinics in Jamaica, Guatemala, and Nicaragua and South Dakota Sioux Indian communities.
