College of Nursing study to prevent osteoporosis in breast cancer survivors
UNMC’s College of Nursing has received more than $2.9 million to evaluate a new approach to prevent osteoporosis in breast cancer survivors after menopause.
The five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Nursing Research, may provide an alternative treatment for breast cancer survivors, most of whom cannot take hormone replacement therapy, the most frequently used preventive treatment. (See story for audio clips).

Cornhusker linebacker tackles nursing profession
As a linebacker for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Tim Miller uses his body to tackle opponents. But it’s his intellect he uses when he tells people he’s studying to be a nurse.
The 6-foot-1, 215-pound sophomore who grew up on a farm near Elmwood, Neb., isn’t bothered by the ribbing he gets from fellow athletes. Instead, he uses it as an opportunity to educate others on the role of nurses.

Survivors of heart disease, stroke make 2002 Heart Walk a personal quest
For many of the individuals and families participating in Saturday’s eighth annual Omaha-Metro American Heart Walk, the walk had personal meaning. With 1,703 people registering for the walk, $305,382 has been raised so far. UNMC received an award for the top fundraising company, raising $32,788 to date. See story for photos.

Nursing career blossoms for mother, daughter
Dawn Franklin has watched her mother build a lifelong career in nursing. On Saturday, the 26-year-old will start building her own career when she graduates with a bachelor’s degree from the UNMC College of Nursing.
The ceremony falls during National Nurses Week, which begins May 6 and culminates May 12 on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of the nursing profession.

College of Dentistry provides dental care to 185 needy children
For six hours Monday approximately 185 children received dental care they might otherwise not have gotten thanks to 200 UNMC dental and dental hygiene students and residents.

College of Nursing Kearney Division to celebrate 25th anniversary April 13
The UNMC College of Nursing Kearney Division will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a variety of activities Saturday, April 13. The division, located on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus in the West Center Building, draws nursing students from a 100-125-mile radius around Kearney.

Dental professor receives National Student Research Mentor Award
UNMC College of Dentistry Associate Professor, Sreenivas Koka, D.D.S., Ph.D., recently received the American Association for Dental Research’s Student Research Group Mentor Award. The award recognizes outstanding faculty members with experience in research and who support student research.

Study examines home-based cardiac rehabilitation vs. traditional cardiac rehab
Researchers at the UNMC College of Nursing have received a $100,000 grant from the American Heart Association to conduct a preliminary study to determine whether home-based cardiac rehabilitation is an effective alternative to traditional cardiac rehabilitation.
UNMC researchers will study 50 Omaha-area study participants, age 40- to 80-years-old, who have had a heart attack or coronary artery bypass. The clinical site for the study will be Nebraska Health System (NHS).

College of Dentistry to provide free dental care to 185 underserved children
UNMC’s College of Dentistry will host Children’s Dental Day Monday, April 8. The day-long event will provide 185 children from Lincoln, Beatrice, Grand Island and Harvard, a day of free dental screening, diagnosis, care and education.
