Dr. Vose appointed chief, UNMC section of oncology/hematology
Julie Vose, M.D., UNMC oncologist, recently was named chief of the section of hematology/oncology, UNMC department of internal medicine, following an extensive national search. Dr. Vose succeeds Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., who served as interim section chief the past two years.

UNMC studies new drug for multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease
Researchers at UNMC were part of what’s being called a landmark international, 23-center study that tested the safety of the drug natalizumab – also known as Antegren. The drug may benefit those with multiple sclerosis, a neurological disease, and Crohn’s disease, an intestinal disease.

Dental researchers on toothbrushes – powered vs. manual
Researchers at the UNMC College of Dentistry recently studied whether a powered toothbrush could reduce plaque accumulation and bleeding gums better than a manual toothbrush. See story for the results.

UNMC nurse practitioner named to state board
Lynne M. Buchanan, Ph.D., assistant professor of nursing in UNMC’s College of Nursing, recently was appointed to serve on the Board of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses for a four-year term. The State Board of Health, Nebraska Health and Human Services System appointed her.

UNMC lung specialist: People with COPD suffer needlessly
Though more than 80 percent of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is caused by cigarette smoking, a surprising number of people with COPD in the United States and Europe don’t believe there’s much that can be done to help their condition. In addition, those people don’t often ask for treatment, according to the results of an international survey. Stephen Rennard, M.D., Larson Professor of Medicine at UNMC, published the first in a series of articles in the European Respiratory Journal addressing some of the issues raised by the survey. UNMC stroke expert recommends redefinition of ‘mini-strokes’
Citing an outdated medical definition of the 1950s and 60s that may prevent thousands at risk for stroke from getting appropriate evaluation and treatment, a group of seven recognized stroke experts, including a UNMC neurologist Pierre Fayad, M.D., have recommended a change of the definition for transient ischemic attack (TIA). Dr. Fayad has studied stroke for 14 years.

Children receive free dental care
More than 350 volunteers took part in Children’s Dental Day on Nov. 14 at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln. The event provided an estimated $35,000 in free dental care and treatment to 140 underserved children from Norfolk and Fremont.

UNMC hosting international conference on bone marrow, stem cell transplantation
The University of Nebraska Medical Center, which is recognized nationally and internationally for its expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of leukemia and lymphoma, is hosting two conferences this week on bone marrow and stem cell transplantation.
The conferences are being held at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Omaha, will focus on advances made in cancer treatment, drugs, research and cancer care.
