Chancellor presents at national public health conference

Two Nebraskans were among nationally noted experts from around the country who made presentations during the First National Congress on Public Health Readiness in Washington D.C. About 750 people attended the July 20-22 conference sponsored by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in partnership with the American Medical Association.

Cancer experts to participate in July 28 Internet chat

Three cancer experts from UNMC will conduct a live Internet chat sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s patient Web site, People Living With Cancer (www.PLWC.org). The live chat will be Wednesday, July 28, from 1 to 2 p.m. (CDT) on “Understanding Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Myeloma.” The chat will provide patients, family members and caregivers an opportunity to ask questions of experts.

UNMC-led anti-malarial drug discovery progresses to human trials

A UNMC College of Pharmacy-led team of scientists is celebrating with cautious optimism as the drug it developed has taken another step toward success. The anti-malarial drug candidate is now being tested in phase I clinical trials in London, where it is being evaluated for safety in a small group of health human volunteers. If the drug works as hoped, it could be marketed to treat malaria at a cost much less than commonly used anti-malarial drugs.
