Ruth and Bill Scott continue their incredible support of UNMC

The UNMC beat goes on — thanks in large measure to the leadership of Omahans Ruth and Bill Scott. The Scotts, who have made five previous major donations to UNMC, are at it again. This time, they are making a gift that will provide the foundation for UNMC to add two new buildings — a College of Public Health and an addition to the College of Nursing — while also completing the establishment of UNMC’s academic campus.

Compromise bill created pertaining to controversial research

After several months of negotiations, a compromise legislative bill has been created by the Judiciary Committee of the Nebraska Legislature to establish guidelines for research involving human embryonic stem cells and other evolving research techniques such as therapeutic cloning.

UNMC to be featured Friday on CBS Evening News

Steve Hartman is a great storyteller. Each week, he scours the country looking for unique stories on fascinating people for his weekly “Assignment America” segment on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. This week, Hartman came to Omaha to put together a video masterpiece on Mark Gilbert, UNMC’s artist in residence who has been involved in two pioneering efforts — teaching medical students how to improve their observation skills and painting a series of portraits of patients and their caregivers.

A Texas neonatologist, John Sparks, M.D., has been named chairman of the UNMC Department of Pediatrics. The appointment, which was effective Jan. 1, was announced today by John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Medicine.
