Legislative team represents UNMC’s best interests
From the time a bill is introduced in the Nebraska Legislature to the time it does or doesn’t become law, many things happen along the way to help shape the final outcome of the bill. One group that often plays a key advisory role to the Legislature is the UNMC Legislative Team.

Compromise bill is highlight of legislative session
One of the major accomplishments of the 2008 session of the Nebraska Legislature was the passage of LB 606, a compromise bill pertaining to the human embryonic stem cell research being done at UNMC as well as the use of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT).

Dr. Neumeister earns Outstanding Teaching Award
Take a negative and turn it into a positive. That’s the task the UNMC College of Medicine faced three years ago after the sudden death of legendary educator LeeRoy Meyer, M.D. One of the faculty members who answered the call was Scott Neumeister, M.D.

Holland honored for his support of research
Richard “Dick” Holland is always willing to take on a challenge. As his daughter, Mary Ann Holland, said, “My dad has never met a controversy he didn’t love. Once he gets his teeth into something, he’s like a pit bull.”
On April 14, Nebraskans for Research honored Holland at its annual tribute luncheon at Omaha’s Happy Hollow Club.

Dr. Kalil involved in national guidelines study on fevers in ICU
UNMC physician involved in the national guidelines study looking at fevers in ICU patients. A UNMC infectious disease specialist, Andre Kalil, M.D., was one of 11 experts from around the country to develop guidelines for what physicians should do when critically ill patients develop a new fever.

Neurological sciences chairman helps lead study comparing stenting vs. surgery
UNMC’s Pierre Fayad, M.D., was one of six researchers on the executive committee for a major national study — reported in the April 10 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine — that compared stenting and surgery in high-risk patients with significant narrowing of the carotid artery and found that there is no significant difference in the long-term outcomes of these patients three years after either one of the procedures was performed to open up the artery.

Ruth and Bill Scott continue their incredible support of UNMC
The UNMC beat goes on — thanks in large measure to the leadership of Omahans Ruth and Bill Scott. The Scotts, who have made five previous major donations to UNMC, are at it again. This time, they are making a gift that will provide the foundation for UNMC to add two new buildings — a College of Public Health and an addition to the College of Nursing — while also completing the establishment of UNMC’s academic campus.
