Dr. Spurzem named medical director of the NHS Adult Intensive Care Units

John Spurzem, M.D., professor in the department of internal medicine, section of pulmonary & critical care medicine, has been named medical director of the Adult Intensive Care Units for NHS University and NHS Clarkson hospitals. He succeeds Joe Sisson, M.D., who will continue to serve as professor and chief of the pulmonary & critical care medicine section.

Nebraska florists to raise money for cancer research

Nebraska florists will take aim on cancer in October through the fourth annual Bouquet of Hope program which supports cancer research at the UNMC’s Eppley Cancer Center.

A total of 18 florists in eight Nebraska communities are participating in this year’s program, which is sponsored by the Friends of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center, a 15-member community based group committed to raising funds for cancer research.

British teen in Omaha for rare brain surgery procedure

All Americans will swallow hard and reflect next week on the first anniversary of Sept. 11. However, for a British family staying at the Lied Transplant Center, Sept. 11 will have an extra special meaning.

“It’s quite symbolic,” said Nigel Kendall, father of Katherine Kendall, an 18-year-old girl who is in Omaha to undergo a rare brain surgery procedure at UNMC/NHS to relieve her ongoing epileptic seizures. “Katherine’s surgery will be finished on Sept. 11.”

Pro wrestlers to raise funds for pediatric AIDS patients

Pro wrestling comes to Omaha on Saturday in the form of a unique fundraiser to benefit pediatric HIV/AIDS patients.

The wrestlers are associated with World League Wrestling (WLW), an organization headed by Harley Race, a legendary pro wrestling figure who is an eight-time world heavyweight champion for the National Wrestling Alliance.

UNMC icon, Hobart Wiltse, M.D., Ph.D., retires

Hobart “Hobe” Wiltse, M.D., Ph.D., has seen UNMC come a long way since he first stepped on campus in 1953 as a medical student.

A professor in the department of pediatrics, Dr. Wiltse may have the most longevity of any current UNMC faculty member. He retired June 28, bringing to a close an outstanding career in which he made a difference in the lives of literally thousands of patients, families and students.
