CNND highlights Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease research
Scientists at the UNMC Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Disorders (CNND) shared their research discoveries with more than 60 community advocates at an Aug. 19 dinner at Happy Hollow Country Club. The center is looking for new ways to fight brain inflammation that affects neurodegenerative processes in mouse models of human Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

Cancer research fund established in honor of Liz Karnes
A fund to advance cancer research and care at the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center has been established in honor of Liz Karnes, an Omaha community leader who died earlier this year after a 12-year battle with cancer.

CNND receives $6 million grant for neurodegeneration studies
The Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Disorders (CNND) at UNMC has received a $6 million grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health to study how the brain’s immune system can lead to damage of nerve cells in HIV-dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The research also will seek to determine how arms of the immune system can be harnessed to reverse different forms of dementia.
