Disaster Behavioral Health Conference July 14-15
The terrorist bombings in London last week sent a chilling reminder to all of us that the threat of terrorism continues to exist. For the third consecutive year, area mental health professionals will get together to look at the psychological aspects of dealing with disasters, as more than 200 people are expected to attend the Nebraska Disaster Behavioral Health Conference on July 14-15 in downtown Omaha.

UNMC, UNL join forces for BIO 2005 convention
A team of more than 20 Nebraskans will head to Philadelphia this weekend for the BIO 2005 Annual International Convention, the world’s largest biotechnology gathering with more than 18,000 biotech executives, investors, journalists, policymakers and scientists from more than 60 countries expected to attend.

Sellout crowd of more than 3,300 attends Cattlemen’s Ball
The 2005 Cattlemen’s Ball was winding down. The nurses and staff in the UNMC tent had put in a full day, taking blood pressures and screening people for prostate cancer and skin damage. A man walked into the tent and approached one of the nursing team. Duo raises money, awareness for MMI autism program
One is a mathematical genius. The other is the head football coach at Notre Dame. Together they were a dynamic one-two punch in raising awareness and money for the autism program at UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute. In all, more than $642,000 was raised at two events.

UNMC leadership team visits four Nebraska communities
UNMC’s leadership team went on a spring road trip last week. But, instead of connecting with oceans or mountains, the connection was with the citizens of Nebraska. For the second consecutive spring, UNMC’s leadership team journeyed across Nebraska making stops in four communities — Fremont, Columbus, Grand Island and Kearney.

UNMC’s Rapid Autopsy Program featured in scientific journal
UNMC’s Rapid Autopsy Program (RAP) received major acclaim this month when the Journal of Neuroimmunology carried two articles written by the UNMC RAP team. One article served as a tutorial for other institutions on what it takes to develop a RAP. The other article detailed the changes that occur in microglial brain cell function with HIV-1-associated dementia.

To say Gail Werner-Robertson is a dedicated fund-raiser is like saying Michelangelo was pretty good with a paintbrush. It doesn’t do her justice. Werner-Robertson, founder and CEO of GWR Wealth Management LLC, is on a mission. She wants to raise $1 million for the autism program at UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute.

Dr. Armitage writes editorial for New England Journal of Medicine
A UNMC oncologist, James Armitage, M.D., the Joe Shapiro Professor of Medicine in the oncology/hematology section, wrote an editorial for the March 24 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.

UNMC neurologist to share stroke expertise
Since joining UNMC, Pierre Fayad, M.D., has built a new department and recruited neurology specialists. He has built programs that greatly enhanced the capabilities of UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, to help patients suffering from strokes, seizures, muscle and nerve disorders, brain cancer and degenerative disorders of the brain such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and dementia.
