Dick Vermeil knew he had been upstaged, but he didn’t mind one bit. The NFL coaching legend delivered the keynote address at the 5th annual GWR Sunshine Foundation benefit dinner at Qwest Center Omaha on June 4 to raise money for the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s autism program.

UNMC epilepsy program making a difference

Everyone looks forward to the weekend, but this coming weekend is extra special to Heather Overton. The 23-year-old Bellevue girl, who was first diagnosed with epilepsy when she was 18 months, will celebrate three years of being seizure free on June 3. It’s a landmark event, and she gives full credit to Sanjay Singh, M.D., director of The Nebraska Epilepsy Center at UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center.

Diabetic soldier returns from Iraq, inspires others

Mark Thompson is on a mission. He wants to inspire other diabetics that if they manage the disease, they can lead an active, full life and, hopefully, be free from complications. Thompson, 29, should know. In 2000, he was diagnosed with Type I (insulin dependent) diabetes.

Events to raise money, awareness for autism program

After raising more than $642,000 for the autism program at UNMC’s Munroe-Meyer Institute last year with a dinner and golf tournament, Gail Werner-Robertson has even bigger plans for this year. Founder and CEO of GWR Wealth Management LLC, Werner-Robertson hopes to raise $1 million this year through a three-day series of events running June 3-5.

Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson paid UNMC a visit on May 5 to get a first-hand look at what many think is the future of surgery — mini-robots. Earlier in the week, Nelson had been instrumental in getting the Senate Armed Services Committee to approve $3 million in earmarked funds to go toward further development of the mini-robot program
