The 7th Annual SHARING the Green Golf Tournament on Sept. 28 at Pacific Springs Golf Course raised more than $25,000 with nearly 100 people golfing.

Seminar to provide insights on postdoctoral education
Postdoctoral scholars, or postdocs, play a critical role in every research institution. On Monday, UNMC’s new Office of Postdoctoral Education will hold its first-ever postdoctoral education seminar. The event is open to postdocs, faculty and graduate students.

Dr. William Berndt, former UNMC chancellor, dies
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5 for William Berndt, Ph.D., former chancellor of UNMC. He died Thursday, Aug. 31 at The Nebraska Medical Center due to ongoing lung complications. Dr. Berndt, 73, joined UNMC in 1982 and held several key administrative posts over the next 20 plus years, serving as chancellor from 1996 to 1998.

Intellectual Property Office making strides
It’s been three good years in the Intellectual Property Office as invention disclosures have increased 60 percent and patents and patent applications have increased 43 percent since 2003. In July, Michael Dixon, Ph.D., was named IPO director.

Regents unanimously approve College of Public Health
The University of Nebraska Board of Regents gave unanimous approval Friday for a College of Public Health to be established on UNMC campus. At the same time, the board also unanimously approved the appointment of Jay Noren, M.D., as the founding dean of the COPH.

UNMC research funding hits record high
In a year in which many academic health science centers felt the sting of cutbacks in research funding from the National Institutes of Health, UNMC had its greatest year ever, bringing in nearly $80 million during fiscal year 2005-06, an increase of nearly 10 percent over the previous year’s record high of $72.5 million.

Dr. Noren to lead development of public health college
The University of Nebraska Board of Regents Friday will be asked to approve the appointment of Jay Noren, M.D., M.P.H., as founding dean of the UNMC College of Public Health. Dr. Noren has been serving as executive vice president, provost, and dean of the graduate college of the University of Nebraska since 2002.

UNMC to seek approval for College of Public Health
UNMC officials Friday will seek approval of the Board of Regents for establishing a College of Public Health on the UNMC campus. If approved, the COPH would be the first new college at UNMC since 1968.
