Honors program alums act as chaperones
Students in the Holdrege Summer Honors Program spent five days in Omaha this summer learning about health sciences and health careers through interactive, hands-on learning opportunities. This year, the 10 high school students from the Holdrege area, were chaperoned by two alumni of the program.

UNMC surgeon president of ACS Nebraska chapter
Debra Sudan, M.D., a transplant surgeon and director of the Intestinal Rehabilitation Program for UNMC and its hospital partner, The Nebraska Medical Center, has been elected president of the Nebraska Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. She will serve a two-year term, which ends in January 2008.

Dr. Kanmogne honored for HIV/AIDS research
Georgette Kanmogne, Ph.D., has two passions: family and research. Last month, those passions came together as Dr. Kanmogne’s family watched her receive the 2006 Nicholas Badami Fellowship Award for Excellence in HIV/AIDS research.

PT student rides with Tour de France legend
Jenny Kast won’t forget her recent bike ride. Kast, a UNMC physical therapy student, was among the 10,000 registered riders in this year’s Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI), where she met Tour de France legend Lance Armstrong.

Jewell helps motorists drive by the book
By day, Lisa Jewell provides young people with hands-on experiences in hopes of them choosing careers in the health profession. At her part-time job, as an instructor for the National Safety Council Greater Omaha Chapter, she teaches people to be safe on the road in order to keep them from ending up in the hospital.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is not just a night of walking for employees of the UNMC Facilities Management and Planning Department. It’s a year of dedication and sweat. This year’s team surpassed its goal, raising $5,911, for the June 11 event.
