Soldier returns from Iraq, graduates from College of Pharmacy
While his classmates graduated from the College of Pharmacy in May 2003, Bob Moser, Pharm.D., commanded convoys of U.S. trucks between Kuwaiti ports and troops in Iraq. A year and a half later, Dr. Moser received his doctor of pharmacy degree at UNMC’s winter commencement ceremonies.

Chancellor: Budget proposal ‘great start’ to legislative session
The budget proposal set forth last week by Gov. Mike Johanns and Lt. Gov. Dave Heineman is a “great start” for opening a dialogue about increasing support for the University of Nebraska, UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., said.

Behrendt takes oath to lead UNMC Student Senate
Saying he wants to be a strong representative for the UNMC student body, third-year medical student Nick Behrendt took the oath of office on Thursday to become the next UNMC Student Senate president. The unopposed victor in November’s student elections, Behrendt also will be the UNMC student representative on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

Internal medicine residents pass boards for seventh straight year
For the seventh consecutive year, residents of UNMC’s Department of Internal Medicine have recorded a 100 percent pass rate on their certification examinations. James O’Dell, M.D., director of the internal medicine residency program, said that no other program in the region has numbers comparable to UNMC.

Fry assumes role of director of governmental relations
In her position as director of governmental relations, Renee Fry wants to introduce UNMC researchers to federal opportunities for non-peer-reviewed research funding. Before she can do that, however, Fry needs to introduce herself to those same medical scientists. That’s why she’s spent much of her first few weeks on campus in meetings with those researchers.

Tickets still available for Night of a Thousand Stars on Dec. 4
Time is running out to buy tickets for the 12th annual “Night of a Thousand Stars,” which will take place Saturday, Dec. 4, at various sites across Nebraska. The event benefits the Nebraska AIDS Project.

Two physicians appointed to administrative positions
Two UNMC physicians have been appointed to administrative positions within the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine. Tim McCashland, M.D., has been named the medical director of liver transplantation, and Mark Mailliard, M.D., has been appointed the interim chief of the section of gastroenterology and hepatology. Drs. McCashland and Mailliard assumed their new roles Sept. 1 when Michael Sorrell, M.D., stepped down from his administrative duties. Dr. Sorrell will continue to treat patients in his general practice.

Regents to consider Research Center of Excellence II
A second research tower at UNMC would improve the health and biosecurity of Nebraskans by providing additional infrastructure for biomedical research, biosecurity preparedness and clinical laboratory service. The Research Center of Excellence II would be constructed adjacent to the Durham Research Center, which opened last year. The University of Nebraska Board of Regents will consider a program statement for the RCE II at its meeting Friday.
