Pharmacy students participate in Legislative Day

About 65 College of Pharmacy students attended the Nebraska Pharmacists Association (NPA) Legislative Day last month at the Nebraska Capitol, where they provided free blood pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol, and bone density screening opportunities for state senators and their staffs while learning specifics about legislation that could affect the practice of pharmacy.

New questionnaire process awaits blood drive donors

The Red Cross Blood Drive at UNMC on Thursday, March 24, will be among the first drives in Omaha to use a new, more efficient process of questioning potential donors. The process should provide a more positive experience for donors, increasing the likelihood that they will donate blood again, said Peter Pellerito, Center for Healthy Living fitness specialist and the UNMC liaison for the blood drives.

Testimony given on embryonic stem cell research

Three UNMC officials testified last week against two legislative bills that would have restricted embryonic stem cell research in Nebraska. Thomas Rosenquist, Ph.D., vice chancellor for research at UNMC, and David Crouse, Ph.D., associate dean for academic affairs, testified in opposition to Legislative Bill 437 and Legislative Bill 750 on Thursday before the Legislative’s Judiciary Committee. The two officials outlined the University of Nebraska’s official position against the two bills.

Dr. Zheng wins Gilmore award; lecture set for Tuesday

Dr. Jialin Zheng will receive the 2005 Joseph P. Gilmore Outstanding Investigator Award on Tuesday. Dr. Zheng gives much of the credit for his research success to his research team and to several UNMC faculty members who have served as mentors to Dr. Zheng.

Nominations sought for faculty awards, including new award for graduate faculty

This spring, UNMC will honor a faculty member who cultivates the professional growth of graduate students. The first-ever UNMC Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Graduate Students Award will be presented at the Annual Faculty Meeting, which will begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, in the Durham Research Center’s Scott Auditorium.
