Clinical study show antiseptic-coated catheters result in fewer infections
A clinical study led by UNMC showed that antiseptic-coated central venous catheters (CVCs) resulted in significantly lower rates of bacterial colonization on the catheters and fewer patients developing bacteremia (bacteria invading the blood stream).

Statewide AHEC advisory board meets for first time, discusses priorities
A newly formed statewide advisory board will be asked to provide consultation, ideas and leadership to meet the health education needs of Nebraska. The Nebraska Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Advisory Board gathered for its organizational meeting March 4 in Grand Island.

Dr. Porter to receive Gilmore Award at Wednesday’s symposium
If it weren’t for the research seed money that Tom Porter, M.D., received from UNMC in the mid-1990s, he’s not sure where the promising research on microbubbles might be. For certain, the research wouldn’t be as advanced as to begin an NIH-funded, Phase I clinical trial looking at the promise of microbubbles in drug delivery, as will occur at UNMC in the next year.
For his research work, Dr. Porter has been awarded the 2002 College of Medicine Joseph P. Gilmore Outstanding Investigator Award.

Gov. Johanns outlines plans to reduce budget, cut NU another 3 percent
The University of Nebraska would face another 3 percent cut in its budget if Gov. Mike Johanns’ proposed budget is approved by the Legislature. Johanns announced his budget reduction plans at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., said the proposed cut would stymie the momentum that UNMC has gained over the past couple of years.

Additional budget cuts at UNMC would have a very negative impact on the university, which in turn will hurt the state of Nebraska and its citizens, Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., said in response to the announcement Friday that the state budget shortfall has grown considerably.

Surgeons from several states will have the opportunity to learn new skills this weekend during the Second Annual Nebraska Endoscopic Surgery Course, which is focused on sinus surgery. The course, to be led by Donald Leopold, M.D., will take place today and Saturday at UNMC.

Bioterrorism report released; Dr. Hinrichs to coordinate university efforts
A UNMC physician will coordinate the University of Nebraska’s bioterrorism preparedness efforts. Steven Hinrichs, M.D., director of the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory (NPHL), was named to his new role Tuesday by NU President L. Dennis Smith, Ph.D. Dr. Smith also released a bioterrorism preparedness report that was prepared by a task force chaired by UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D.

James Armitage, M.D., to be honored by Omaha Press Club
James Armitage, M.D., will join an illustrious group of local, regional and national figures when he is honored Feb. 4 by the Omaha Press Club.
Dean of the UNMC College of Medicine, Dr. Armitage will be recognized with the OPC’s most prestigious award — “The Face on the Barroom Floor.” He will be the 86th individual to receive this recognition, and the first physician ever to be honored.

Sam Augustine, Pharm.D., associate professor of pharmacy practice in the UNMC College of Pharmacy, has been selected as the recipient of the American Pharmaceutical Association Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management (AphA-APPM) William H. Briner Distinguished Achievement Award in Nuclear Pharmacy Practice.
