Clinical psychologist cultivates minds
Keith Allen, Ph.D., isn’t likely to give the pre-doctoral interns that he mentors a lot of answers when discussing intervention strategies for patients. Instead, the UNMC clinical psychologist seeks to cultivate the future psychologists’ minds with in-depth dialogue and thought about why specific treatments are effective. This is the first of a three-part series featuring this year’s Outstanding Teachers.

UNMC announces first phase of budget cuts
UNMC today announced its plans to reduce its budget by $2 million for the fiscal year 2003-2004. “None of these cuts are easy. We’ve tried to preserve our educational programs in these cuts, and I think that we’ve done a good job of selecting parts of the budget that will have the least impact on the overall vision of UNMC,” UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer said. See story for more details.

Officials compare Nebraska budget woes to surrounding states
Popular opinion and newspaper headlines would lead you to believe that the University of Nebraska’s budget woes are similar to every other state university in the country. But a look at surrounding states shows that the cuts to NU’s budget isolate the university on an island, where it is at a competitive disadvantage for recruiting new faculty and students. NU’s appropriation hasn’t kept pace with general fund increases
When the Nebraska general fund appropriation rose more than 12 percent in 1998-1999, the University of Nebraska’s allocation from the state increased less than 4 percent.
In fact, the University of Nebraska’s allocation increase percentage has matched or exceeded the state’s general fund growth rate in only three of the past 11 years. This article is the second in a three-part series focusing on the UNMC budget.

UNMC faces next round of budget cuts
The news last Friday wasn’t good. The state’s economic forecasting board cut another $69 million from projected tax collections, meaning the state of Nebraska is faced with a $761 million budget shortfall over the next biennium. For sure, some of those reductions will be made to the University of Nebraska.
During the rest of this week, UNMC Today will present some of the basics about the budget situation at the university, how the university’s appropriation has compared with other state agencies during the past decade, and how Nebraska’s budget situation compares with other states.

Dr. Thoreson named 2003 winner of Gilmore award
When Wallace Thoreson, Ph.D., was in college, his textbooks seemed to indicate that scientists had perfect vision on almost everything about human eyesight. However, as he progressed through his graduate and post-graduate training, Dr. Thoreson realized that the science world’s focus of vision function and disease was more than a little blurry. Dr. Thoreson is being honored March 5 as the recipient of the 2003 College of Medicine Joseph P. Gilmore Outstanding Investigator Award.
