Employees have time to return SimplyWell sign-up cards
The data obtained from the health screenings of a new campus wellness program will help to guide future employee wellness efforts, says Jayme Nekuda, UNMC’s manager of health promotion. The SimplyWell program is free to UNMC employees who participate in UNMC’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield medical insurance plan. Employees may still enroll by returning their sign-up cards to the SimplyWell office.

Panowicz honored with Light of Wellness Award
A year ago, when Dorothy Panowicz would return to the UNMC Administration Building from a meeting at Wittson Hall, the uphill walk left her winded. Today, a few months after smoking her last cigarette, the Business and Finance staff assistant makes the climb with ease. She was one of 11 Omaha-area people honored last week with the William M. Kizer Light of Wellness Award, presented by the Wellness Council of the Midlands.

Next Thursday’s UNMC campus blood drive has been extended for another hour because employees and students have given such a positive response.

“Night of a Thousand Stars” set for Dec. 6
The 11th annual “Night of a Thousand Stars” will shine in Omaha on Saturday, Dec. 6, and the UNMC HIV Team and Stars Committee hope that a record number of people will illuminate the Omaha Woman’s Club to begin their evening of celebration.

Emergency medicine residency formed at UNMC
UNMC has formed a residency program in emergency medicine, and the new program should benefit the emergency care of citizens across Nebraska and the region. The first six physicians of the UNMC Emergency Medicine Residency Program will begin their three-year residencies in July 2004.

Congress approves $2.5 million to UNMC for mobile lab technology
The U.S. Congress has approved a Department of Defense appropriations bill that provides $2.5 million for UNMC to take its clinical laboratory automation technology to the next level.
