In January 2023, the Division of Student Success and the Office of Accreditation and Assessment administered the annual UNMC-wide Student Satisfaction Survey to gather feedback on students’ overall experiences with UNMC.
This year’s survey received feedback from more than 1,000 students, the largest number of responses received to date.
The survey divides questions into several categories, including communications, wellness, academic and professional success and diversity, equity and inclusion. Highlights from this year’s report include:
- 94% of respondents felt that students from all backgrounds were somewhat or very respected at UNMC.
- 87% of respondents felt that UNMC is somewhat or very encouraging to the open expression of ideas, opinions and beliefs.
- 81% of respondents felt that personal wellness is somewhat or very valued at UNMC.
Additionally, responses indicated that students were particularly interested in increased opportunities for community engagement.
“This year, 78% of students reported that best-practice, community engagement training would be somewhat or very beneficial to their education,” said Andrew Faltin, director of operations and strategic initiatives for the UNMC Division of Student Success. “The same percentage responded that it is somewhat or very important to have opportunities to collaborate with community partners as part of their UNMC experience.”
Each year, the division and partners across the university use survey responses to develop new resources and enhance existing services for students. As a response to the 2023 Student Survey, planned improvements for the 2023-2024 school year include:
- Increased student engagement in clubs and organizations
30% of students indicated that they would like to spend more time participating in student clubs and organizations, with 33% of students indicating they did not currently participate in any student clubs or organizations. In response, the UNMC Student Life, Inclusion and Diversity Office will be sponsoring a campaign to encourage all students to join a student organization or start an organization. - Development of leadership skills
A total of 601 students responded that they are interested in leadership skills related to effective communication. The UNMC Division of Student Success is developing a program to highlight individuals who span UNMC and Nebraska Medicine and can provide real examples of communication in multiple leadership settings. These individuals could range from nurses with examples from a clinical setting to senior executives with examples from a community board. - Increased student engagement in community health
In all, 365 students reported that they were interested in working on community engagement in the area of mental health. In the coming months, UNMC Counseling and Psychological Services will be offering students the opportunity to receive mental health first aid training.
