Showing of Billy Mills documentary set for May 24

Olympic legend Billy Mills

Olympic legend and Native American hero Billy Mills proved that no matter how many odds are stacked against you, all you need are courage and fortitude to win.

Billy Mills won the gold medal in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics 10,000-meter run. His victory is considered one of the greatest Olympic upsets.

In Lakota, Billy Mills is called “Tamakhóčhe Theȟíla” – “Respects the Earth.” Since his historic Olympic win, Mills has championed Native rights and supported tribal communities through his non-profit Running Strong for American Indian Youth.

In 2014, he partnered with Siobhan Wescott, MD, director of the NE-HEALING and American Indian Health program in the UNMC College of Public Health, to produce the documentary “Conquering Chronic Disease with Olympian Billy Mills,” in which he shares his own struggles with diabetes.

The 38-minute documentary will be shown at noon on May 24 in a hybrid event in the Michael F. Sorrell Center room 3002.

Lunch is sponsored by the UNMC Office of Inclusion and will be provided for the first 50 attendees.

This program is part of the Brave Space series and is a collaboration between Nebraska Medicine’s Inclusion and Diversity Office and NE-HEALING.
