New nursing faculty and staff, March 2023

Leah Niebaum, MA

Since mid-December, the following have joined the UNMC College of Nursing: 

  • Don Houy, MBA, grants administration coordinator, started Feb. 13. He will take up the helm as nursing’s post award grants management lead. Houy brings a wealth of experience that allowed him to hit the ground running—six years of accounting experience from UNMC’s sponsored programs accounting office, adding to his six-year tenure managing student accounts at Oral Roberts University. 
  • Leah Niebaum, MA, office associate II, started Feb. 20. Niebaum has nearly two decades of experience in the University of Nebraska system, previously serving as Sponsored Programs and Research Associate at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and program associate for UNMC’s international observership program.  
  • Greg Forbes, BA, communication & media specialist, started Feb. 20. Forbes brings more than 10 years of experience in reporting, photography, writing, editing, social media posts and website management for news agencies in Iowa and Nebraska covering education, local and city government, sports, community events, human interest stories and breaking news.   • Heather Cormier, AS, nurse specialist, Omaha Division, started Jan. 3. 
  • Shalea Cotton, DNP, RN, clinical assistant professor, Omaha Division, started Jan. 3. 
  • Rachel Kunkle, PhD, RN, assistant professor, Omaha Division, started Jan. 3. 
  • Linda Smith, PhD, RN, clinical assistant professor, Omaha Division, started Jan. 3. 
  • Ashley Vermillion, MSN, RN, clinical instructor, Omaha Division, started Jan. 3. 
  • Sherri Alvarado, office associate I, West Nebraska Division, started March 1. 
  • Allie Eaton, office associate II, Lincoln Division, started March 13.
