New investigator: Jawed Siddiqui, PhD

Jawed Siddiqui, PhD

This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony on March 9 for UNMC’s Scientist Laureate, Research Leadership, Distinguished Scientist, New Investigator and Community Service to Research Award recipients.

New Investigator

The New Investigator Award is given to outstanding UNMC scientists who in the past two years have secured their first funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense or other national sources. New investigators also had to demonstrate scholarly activity, such as publishing their research and/or presenting their findings at national conventions.

  • Name: Jawed Siddiqui, PhD
  • Title: Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
  • Joined UNMC: 2016
  • Hometown: Ahirauli Bazar, Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, India

Please describe your research focus in three words or less:

  • Bone metastasis and therapeutics
  • Osteoimmuno-oncology and chemokines
  • Bone microenvironment and dormancy

Why is research important in the world today?

Bone metastasis, which is the spread of cancer cells from the primary tumor to the bones, is a severe complication of many cancers. In the current scenario, bone metastasis is highly correlated with morbidity and mortality of cancer patients. The cells and components of the bone microenvironment provide a suitable ambiance for niche formation, colonization and growth of disseminated cancer cells. My ongoing research on bone metastasis is important in the world today because it can help us to improve our understanding of the mechanism behind the dissemination of cancer cells into the bones, the altered adaptive signaling of cancer cells in the bone microenvironment and how to prevent or treat it.

My research will make a difference because:

My research approach can lead to the development of new treatment options for bone metastasis, which can greatly benefit the longevity and quality of life of metastatic cancer patients.

The best advice I’ve ever received is:

No two things have been combined better than knowledge and patience.

Three things you may not know about me are:

  • I had a major interest in mathematics and physics while I was at college.
  • I am a naturally curious person who enjoys researching new things.
  • I used to want to be a movie director.
