Doty named director of Sponsored Programs Administration

David Doty

David Doty has been named the new director of Sponsored Programs Administration in the UNMC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.

Ken Bayles, PhD, vice chancellor for research, announced the appointment Monday.

“I am thrilled we were able to recruit someone of David’s caliber to lead SPA into the future,” Dr. Bayles said. “David has worked on both the pre- and post-award side of grants management at multiple institutions, understands the nuances of the contracting process and certainly knows the NU system well. He will be a great addition to the UNMC team.”

As the director of SPA, Doty’s responsibilities will include supporting faculty and grant administrators in their pursuit of external funding, assuring they are compliant with all relevant federal, state, and institutional policies and regulations. He also will act as the official authorized signature authority of UNMC for sponsored program grants and contracts.

Beth DeCarolis, who had been serving as the interim director, said she was excited for Doty to join SPA as director.

“He has big shoes to fill, after the passing of Madison Gray last year, and I’m confident his three decades in university research administration will serve us well,” she said. “I look forward to working with him in the coming months to learn more about his vision for SPA as UNMC’s research portfolio continues to grow and diversify.”

Doty will assume his new role on April 3.

“I’m very excited for the opportunity to serve the faculty, staff and students of UNMC as the institution looks to increase the research scope, prominence and impact of UNMC as a top-tier academic health sciences center,” Doty said. “Research administration is definitely a team sport, and I’m looking forward to working with all of the great people within SPA and the campus community who help make research possible at this amazing institution.”

Doty comes to UNMC from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he has led the office of sponsored programs since November 2019. He has more than 30 years of experience in research administration and has held positions in the research offices of Colorado State University and Ohio State University  prior to coming to Nebraska.

He holds two bachelor’s degrees from Ohio State University, in production and operations management and in marketing, as well as numerous professional certifications and memberships.
