Sensory room reopens next week

McGoogan Health Sciences Library’s sensory room will reopen next week, Nov. 14-18. Developed in response to a Student Senate proposal, the sensory room is a place for library users to explore all five senses.

Located in WH classroom 6032, the room is open to students and the campus community.

Visitors can engage the senses through art supplies, floor pillows, a variety of soothing lights, online visual experiences, kinetic sand, scratch-and-sniff stickers and various snacks. Sensory room users are encouraged to adjust lights and white noise machines to their comfort levels.

Graduate Student Association joins clean water challenge

In an initiative to strengthen ties to the community and increase UNMC graduate student involvement in environmental stewardship, the UNMC Graduate Student Association participated in the Keep Omaha Beautiful clean water challenge. As part of the Only Rain Down the Storm Drain program, the challenge cared for storm drain inlets around UNMC and neighboring communities.

Volunteers set a goal to mark 1,000 storm drains with “No Dumping” decals and distribute 2,000 educational door hangers to the Omaha community. They surpassed that goal, with a total of 1,338 marked storm drains and 2,082 door hangers distributed in September and October.

The association won the water challenge for the most storm drains marked for groups of 10 people or less with 143 total storm drains.

The GSA outreach chair Wafaa Aldhafiri, who coordinated the initiative, said, “We are very happy that we got to play a vital role in empowering Omaha neighbors to help prevent stormwater pollution. The 2022 Clean Waters Challenge was a complete success, and we aim continue to participate in volunteering initiative for our community.”
