Ally Dering-Anderson, PharmD, clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice and science, has been awarded one of her profession’s highest honors, the Bowl of Hygeia.
The honor came as a surprise announcement at the Oct. 20 meeting of the Nebraska Pharmacists Association, which was held virtually.
“I’m honored beyond words,” Dr. Dering-Anderson said. “There are so many pharmacists who I have admired and aspired to live up to who have been selected for this award.”
The Bowl of Hygeia honor dates back to 1958 and “recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take active roles in their communities,” according to the American Pharmacists Association Foundation. The honor is sponsored by the foundation and National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations; it is presented annually throughout the United States by affiliated state organizations.
Dr. Dering-Anderson follows in the footsteps of previous UNMC honorees, including Chris Shaffer, PharmD, and Charles Krobot, PharmD.
“I would add my dad (College of Pharmacy alumnus Jacob Dering) to that list,” Dr. Dering-Anderson said. “He was selected in 1992. I learned civic service from my family, not for awards. I honestly believe that when we can give back in any way, part of being a health care professional means that we do that.”
Dr. Dering-Anderson has earned multiple honors for her educational, clinical and community service roles, including the Spirit of Community Service Award from the UNMC Faculty Senate and a national award for distinguished achievement in pharmacy practice from the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management. Dr. Dering-Anderson was one of three national finalists for Next-Generation Pharmacist 2013 Civic Leader of the Year.
Nathan Sutera, PharmD, clinical assistant professor of pharmacy practice and science, and pharmacy coordinator for psychiatry, Nebraska Medicine, also was honored with the Distinguished Young Pharmacist award at the Nebraska Pharmacists Association meeting.
