Dean’s message: Summer a time of transition

June and July mark the transition of residents and fellows, as we congratulate and send on their way those who have completed training and welcome a new group to UNMC. I had the pleasure of spending a little time the end of last week providing some words of welcome to the incoming residents and fellows. It is wonderful to have this talented group of young physicians with us.

This part of summer is usually quieter than other times of the year for the faculty and staff involved in medical student education. However, this year we have been provided the opportunity and many of the resources needed to increase the presence of the UNMC College of Medicine in central Nebraska, as part of a broad expansion of UNMC colleges and programs to Kearney and surrounding areas.

This will entail the establishment of a satellite campus of the medical school in central Nebraska, headquartered at UNK. We are very appreciative of the generosity and vision of the Nebraska legislature and Gov. Ricketts in supporting this project. In collaboration with the other UNMC colleges and UNK, work to develop plans for the new building on the UNK campus that will house this expansion already has begun. In addition, several senior leaders in the college have begun leading efforts to develop a vision for the curriculum, faculty, infrastructure and administrative needs to implement this expansion of the college of medicine. You will hear much more about this in the coming months, with many of you being asked to participate and/or review plans and concepts.

I will close, as I often do with my summer messages, by encouraging each of you to seek some down time and enjoy the warmer weather and the modest drop of COVID activity in the area. Thank you for all that you do for the college and UNMC. Have a great summer and keep safe.
