Chosen name, pronouns soon reflected across platforms

Last year, the University of Nebraska System launched a Chosen Name and Gender Identity Policy, also known as Executive Memorandum No. 40, that enables individuals to self-select the way they want to be addressed on campus.

The policy allows students, faculty and staff at all NU campuses — including UNMC — to select their chosen name, gender identity and pronouns.

The option was available to students via MyRecords and to faculty and staff in Firefly. Since that time, Information Technology teams have worked to align chosen names within UNMC and Nebraska Medicine specific systems (ie: Canvas, Zoom, Office 365, directories, Outlook).

IT representatives report that individuals soon will see the changes reflected across platforms, as outlined below. They also want to remind individuals where they should update their chosen name if they want these systems to reflect the changes.

Chosen Name

This week, individuals will be able to select their chosen name via:

  • Office 365
  • Zoom
  • Campus Directory
  • Campus Applications

The following resources will come onboard soon afterward:

  • Canvas
  • Global Address List (GAL) Display Name

Chosen names also won't automatically be available for badge IDs or existing login account names/email addresses, meaning someone has to place an IT Service Request ticket to initiate the change.

Moving forward, email addresses for new students, faculty and staff will be created based on Chosen Name if it's in Firefly or PeopleSoft before the role is active.

Pronouns

Pronouns soon will be available via Zoom, but not Canvas (IT will be adding this in the future).

As systems and applications are upgraded, IT will continue to evaluate whether or not chosen names and pronouns can be technically added.
