Alla Shapiro, MD, PhD, the first physician responder to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster, will speak in Omaha in May. Members of the public are invited to attend the event, where Dr. Shapiro will discuss "History Repeats: Revisiting Chernobyl."
Dr. Shapiro is the author of "Doctor on Call: Chernobyl Responder, Jewish Refugee, Radiation Expert." She will share her experiences at Chernobyl following the disaster, what she learned and how that experience has shaped her life.
The talk will be held May 12, from 7 to 8 p.m., in the Strauss Performing Arts Center at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, 6305 University Drive North. University of Nebraska Medical Center Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, will give a brief welcome, followed by remarks and an introduction by Ken Bayles, PhD, associate vice chancellor for basic science research at UNMC.
The event requires no registration, but attendees will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Following Dr. Shapiro’s presentation, Dr. Bayles and David Berkowitz, PhD, Willa Cather Professor in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Chemistry, will discuss how the University of Nebraska is positioning itself to be at the forefront of pharmaceutical research on drugs that help prevent the damaging effects of ionizing radiation.
