Honorees will be recognized at a luncheon on Wednesday, June 22, at the Scott Conference Center.

Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health awards grants

The Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (CS-CASH) at the UNMC College of Public Health recently awarded a total of $100,000 in pilot grants to five researchers.

The center's pilot projects program supports project investigators with awards up to $20,000 each over an 18-month period. The goal is to enable investigators to collect preliminary data to support submission of grant applications for independent, longer-term projects related to agricultural safety and health.

Funding for the grants came to CS-CASH from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the UNMC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Office of Research and Economic Development.

Included in the grant recipients were:

  • Mystera Samuelson, PhD, director of the animal behavior core at UNMC, for "Exposure to Zoonotic Diseases in Agricultural Workers of the Great Plains: An evaluation of real and perceived risk and mitigation behaviors in rural agricultural workers of the Great Plains."
  • Shinobu Watanabe-Galloway, PhD, professor at the UNMC College of Public Health Department of Epidemiology, for "Development of CRC Screening Education Material for Agricultural Workers."

The pilot projects program has been an essential component of the center since it was established in 2011. In addition to NIOSH funding, funding from the vice chancellor for research office has allowed CS-CASH to fund 63 pilot projects from 2011 through 2021.

The next call for applications will be in April. Email Ellen Duysen for more information.
