Douglas County Commissioner James Cavanaugh, who represents the UNMC area, recently toured the campus and met with UNMC leadership.
Cavanaugh, the District 2 commissioner, met Feb. 10 with Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, at the Wigton Heritage Center and discussed the COVID-19 pandemic with Ali Khan, MD, MPH, dean of the UNMC College of Public Health.
Cavanaugh said he wanted to discuss collaboration between Douglas County and UNMC. He also cited the potential to build on that collaboration to make 42nd Street a public health corridor — with UNMC, the Douglas County Health Center and the Omaha VA Medical Center all in the same area.
The commissioner toured the iEXCEL program with Benjamin Stobbe, assistant vice chancellor for clinical simulation, iEXCEL (Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning). IEXCEL is located within the Davis Global Center, the advanced clinical simulation facility that UNMC opened in 2020.
Cavanaugh said he was impressed by the Davis Global Center and by UNMC’s expertise in a wide variety of areas, including Dr. Khan’s expertise during the pandemic.
The commissioner’s message to the UNMC community: “Keep it up.”
“You do a great job,” Cavanaugh said, “and you're a great asset to our community and our state. Collaborating with UNMC is one of my goals as a commissioner that represents this district.”
