Match Day set for March 18 at Baxter Arena

Match Day will be held March 18 at the University of Nebraska at Omaha's Baxter Arena.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Baxter Arena will be alive with anticipation on Friday, March 18. That’s when 131 UNMC senior medical students will find out where they will spend their residency training after graduating from medical school in May.

Students are matched through a computer program to align their preferences for residency programs in order to fill the thousands of training positions available at U.S. teaching hospitals.

The National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®), or The Match®, is a private, non-profit organization that provides an orderly and fair mechanism for matching the preferences of applicants for U.S. residency positions with the preferences of residency program directors.

The UNMC community can look for Match Day coverage in UNMC Today, Flickr and on UNMC and College of Medicine social media channels. Students can add to the occasion by tagging their own social posts to #UNMCMatch2022.

In the crowd of students, families and friends will be a former Husker football player, a former Yale art student, students who during medical school got married, had babies and at least three married couples who will “couples match” – each couple will find out if they receive residency assignments together.

“For my class and our loved ones, Match Day is one of those ‘benchmark’ moments,” said Taylor Kratochvil, president of the class. “The event is an opportunity to reflect on the road that brought us here, recognize the many folks who have supported us and celebrate the adventures ahead. Particularly amidst the pandemic, our class is really just very excited to safely gather and spend time with each other.”
