As Maureen Boyle, MD, walked through the Davis Global Center at UNMC, she continually expressed amazement at the technology being used to teach students, doctors and residents.
“The simulation lab takes the model of ‘See one, do one, teach one’ to an unimaginable level,” the Douglas County commissioner said on her recent campus visit.
Dr. Boyle, who is a 1997 graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine, said she is impressed and a little envious of the current health professions students who can train using such impressive technology.
As part of her introduction to iEXCEL (the Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning) housed in the Davis Global Center, Dr. Boyle got a glimpse of the continuum of care training experienced by learners in the simulated home on the lower level of the facility through the surgical suites on the third floor.
In the holographic theater, Dr. Boyle watched a hologram of UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, give an overview of all the different modalities — including augmented and virtual reality scenarios, human simulators and task trainers — that are available to students, residents, physicians and fellows to use as part of their training.
“With these eye-popping tools and teleconnection, UNMC educates both new health care professionals and can reach those already in practice, no matter where they serve. And it’s all about improving patient care,” Dr. Boyle said.
