Medical center verified as trauma center through 2024

Providing the highest level of care for the most seriously injured children and adults.

That’s the mission of the trauma team at Nebraska Medical Center. That commitment has once again been recognized by the American College of Surgeons.

Nebraska Medical Center has been verified as a Level I Trauma Center, the highest level possible, through September 2024.

Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the Committee on Trauma’s Consultation/Verification Program for Hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provided not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients.

Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance. These criteria are examined during an on-site visit.

"I am very proud of our team, and we couldn’t do what we do without the work of many individuals and departments across our entire organization," said Zachary Baumann, DO, Nebraska Medicine trauma medical director. "Maintaining the status of an American College of Surgeons-verified Level I Trauma Center demonstrates Nebraska Medicine’s reputation of excellence in the management of traumatically injured patients of all ages not only in our local community, but across the state and region."

"This verification is a tribute to the strong teamwork that exists within our organization," said Michael Wadman, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Emergency Medicine. "Working together, our goal is to provide the best possible outcome for every patient who comes to us, whether it’s through the door of the emergency room or by ambulance or medical helicopter when time is most critical."

Nebraska Medical Center continues to be the only ACS-verified Level I Trauma Center in the Omaha metro area that admits both adult and pediatric patients.
