COM resident of the month

Sonia Shah, MD

Name: Sonia Shah, MD

Medical school you attended/year you graduated: Creighton University, class of 2018

Residency/fellowship at UNMC: Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency

Program director: Michael Weaver, DO

How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC? My training program is four years, and I am currently in my final year.

What do you like the most about your training program? Definitely my co-residents. We all get along really well and help each other whenever needed.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future?

One big challenge that graduate medical education is already facing and will continue to face in the future is how to promote resident wellness and decrease burnout. Another big challenge will be increasing the number of residency positions to match the growing number of medical school positions.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

  • Matching into my No. 1 choice for spinal cord injury fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin!
  • Becoming the PM&R chief resident.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

  • A very long time ago, I was a gymnast and I competed for Team USA on an event called the Double-mini Trampoline. I even won a gold medal at the world championships.
  • For better or for worse, I am an Indianapolis Colts fan.
  • I am obsessed with small white dogs (specifically malteses) and tiny cutlery.
