The delta variant is causing an increase in the census of patients with COVID-19 at Nebraska Medical Center. Since mid-July, leaders have been preparing for what impact this may have on the med center community.
The rise of cases comes at a time when surgical schedules are busier than forecasted and the clinical staffing situation is under enormous stress.
“The current situation is not sustainable,” said Cory Shaw, executive vice president-chief operating officer.
The following operational changes will be in effect on Monday, Aug. 30:
- Surgical cases at the Hixson Lied and Werner operating rooms that require a hospital admission will be capped as follows:
- 10 cases daily: Monday and Friday
- 15 cases daily: Tuesday and Thursday
- 20 cases daily: Wednesday
- Surgery scheduling for Bellevue Medical Center, Fritch Surgery Center, Village Pointe Surgery Center, as well as procedural scheduling for endoscopy, interventional radiology, and Cath/EP lab continues with current approach.
- Leaders expect this operational plan to continue September through October.
- It may change based on additional operational impacts.
“I know this has been a tough road for many of you,” Shaw said. “While I understand it’s difficult to work under stress and the constant changes of this pandemic, please know you are appreciated. Our shortage of nursing staff is top of mind for me and our senior leaders. We understand working with an understaffed team is not easy. Please know we are aware and doing what we can to ensure your well-being and the safety of our patients.”
