Fellowship program director of the month

Andrea Green Hines, MD

Name: Andrea Green Hines, MD

Medical school attended: UNMC

Location of your residency/fellowship training: UNMC Internal Medicine-Pediatrics and UNMC Adult and Pediatric Infectious Diseases

What residency/fellowship program at UNMC are you serving as program director for: Pediatric Infectious Diseases

Number of trainees: One

How long have you been the program director: Three years

What made you chose to become the program director?  There are many educators in my family, and I have always enjoyed teaching and interacting with our fellows, rotating residents and medical students. So when the opportunity arose, I thought it would be a good fit.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future?  I come across a lot of residents and medical students who, despite their interests, will not consider pursuing a fellowship due to their concerns surrounding the pangs of additional training and/or delaying a higher income. In those instances, I try and counsel them that in my experience (and I was teased quite a bit for pursuing eight years of training following medical school), it was all worth the extra effort and sacrifice as I am doing exactly what I love to do. You really can't put a price on being happy and fulfilled in your profession.

What are the strengths of your training program?

Our friendly and approachable faculty are extremely vested in the education of our fellows and have diverse research interests and roles within and outside of our division. We are eager to teach and mentor. In addition, as we are part of two large regional medical centers (UNMC and Children's Hospital & Medical Center), we see a wide breadth of infectious disease pathology. Our fellows get to see it all.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

Like so many other parents last year, due to the pandemic and remote learning, I became a part-time kindergarten teacher for my oldest child. Maybe I shouldn't list it as an accomplishment, however, as I think I'll give myself a failing grade! All respect to the professional teachers everywhere, especially the ones who teach our youngest citizens!

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

  • I was named after my German-born grandfather, and my name is pronounced "Awn-dree-uh".
  • I am a grateful mother of four.
  • In my theoretical free time, you might find my husband and I watching HGTV and planning our next home reno.
