Members of the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine communities are invited to celebrate Pride month with a variety of education and outreach events.
2021 Pride T-shirts
Special allowance has been made to wear the 2021 Pride T-shirt on Fridays in June in honor of PRIDE month. If you pre-ordered a shirt, you have likely already received it or have been contacted by The Company Store at Nebraska Medicine or the UNMC Bookstore. Both locations have a limited number of shirts available for purchase if you missed the window to pre-order. A limited number of these also will be available at the 2021 Heartland Pride parade for free.
Pronoun pins now available

The UNMC and Nebraska Medicine LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance is excited to offer pronoun buttons to individuals who wish to share their pronouns. Wearing a pronoun button makes your pronouns explicit and helps normalize asking and talking about them, as opposed to assuming or guessing.
Buttons will be available for pickup throughout June and July, while supplies last, at the following locations:
- UNMC Office of Inclusion’s Inclusion Corner (Level 6, McGoogan Health Science Library)
- Nebraska Medicine Human Resources (Kiewit Tower)
- UNMC Human Resources (40th Street and Dewey Avenue)

CURED Film Screening: June 12 – June 18
The UNMC/Nebraska Medicine LGBTQ+ Employee Alliance invites you to a special private virtual screening of “Cured,” co-sponsored by the UNMC Department of Psychiatry, the UNMC Office of Inclusion, and the UNMC College of Medicine Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Described as “fascinating” (Hollywood Reporter), “riveting” (The Queer Review) and “one of the best documentaries of this or any year” (British Film Institute) — and the winner of Audience Favorite awards at Frameline and NewFest — “Cured” takes viewers inside the David-versus-Goliath battle that led the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from its manual of mental illnesses in 1973. The film spotlights a diverse group of activists who achieved this epic victory in the movement for LGBTQ equality.
CURED Panel Discussion: June 17
A panel discussion on the film will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 17, moderated by Dr. Arthur Kornitsky and featuring the following panelists:
- Bennett Singer, the film’s co-director
- Rev. Magora Kennedy, activist and film interviewee
- Dr. Richard Pillard, retired Boston psychiatrist and film interviewee
- Megan Hunt, Nebraska State Senator
- Sheritta Strong, MD, UNMC Director of inclusion and psychiatrist

Heartland Pride 2021: July 10
UNMC and Nebraska Medicine will participate in the Heartland Pride 2021 Parade and Festival on July 10, 2021. Med center participants will assemble at 9 a.m. to march in the Pride Parade at 10 a.m. in the Old Market in Omaha. Details are being finalized. Family and friends are welcome. Wear a 2021 UNMC and Nebraska Medicine co-branded black pride shirt (a limited number of these will be available at the parade for free) or any UNMC or Nebraska Medicine shirt.
The Pride Festival begins at 1:30 p.m. at Baxter Arena in Omaha. The med center is are seeking volunteers to help with the parade and festival. Please send a note to Laura Schutte-Lundy or Kari Zelenka to volunteer or ask questions.
Panel of LGBTQ+ Individuals and Professionals: July 13
The Munroe-Meyer Institute Diversity and Inclusion Council and MMI Psychology Diversity Committee are co-hosting a panel featuring LGBTQ+ individuals and professionals that will take place Tuesday, July 13 from 12 p.m.-1 p.m. on Zoom. More information is forthcoming.
