IT announces new standard PC configuration

Given the events of 2020 and the new, more mobile nature of our enterprise, there has been an unprecedented demand for secure, reliable technology that can be flexible and perform in a wide variety of situations and locations, both on campus as well as from remote locations.

IT has designed a new and more flexible standard configuration to meet new business requirements. In short, IT is migrating away from larger, stationary desktop workstations and moving toward laptops and docking stations wherever feasible. There will undoubtedly be times where a full desktop computer is needed due to specific hardware or vendor considerations. These will be approved on a case-by-case basis as needed, but the overall intent is to provide a mobile workspace for as individual colleagues needing a flexible/mobile computing environment.

This information is being sent for your information and also to aid in budget preparation for FY22. See below for the new standard configuration for UNMC and Nebraska Medicine and the approximate cost of the technology package.

Standard configuration:

  • 14-inch laptop
    • Processor = i5 (minimum)
      Memory = 8GB (minimum)

    • Storage = 256GB SSD (minimum)
  • Docking station
  • 24-inch monitor (single or dual as needed)
  • USB headset (for heavy Zoom/softphone users)

Total approximate hardware cost = $1,550
