Sharon Ishii-Jordan, PhD, will speak Tuesday via Zoom on the history of Asians in the United States in a presentation sponsored by the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s Diversity and Inclusion Commitee.

The presentation will be held from noon-1 p.m. and can be viewed through ENGAGE here.

Dr. Ishii-Jordan will speak on the topic, “Asian Americans: Yellow Pearls or Yellow Peril?”

The history of Asians in the United States has included images of pearls and perils. Dr. Ishii-Jordan’s presentation will show how legislation, immigration and economics both fuel and are shaped by U.S. society’s impressions of and actions toward persons of Asian descent. Ignorance and fear lead to discrimination; knowledge and relationships support authentic trust.

Dr. Ishii-Jordan is a former associate dean of the Creighton University College of Arts and Sciences and a professor emerita of education. She has taught and researched on teacher development in special education and culturally/linguistically diverse students. She also has presented nationally on Japanese-American history, Asian-American discrimination, and cultural diversity issues.
