Lisa Muschall is Gold U winner

Lisa Muschall

Lisa Muschall, director of administration and operations in the UNMC College of Nursing, has a unique expertise in process improvements.

For her outstanding service to UNMC, Muschall will receive the Gold U Award for March. She will be recognized during this month’s University of Nebraska Board of Regents meeting.

When there is a vacancy in the college, Muschall works with faculty and staff to redistribute work and finds temporary help until the position is filled. She is adept at reevaluating the position to re-envision what is most needed to achieve the college’s goals and mission for the benefit of the college and its divisions in Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk, Kearney and Scottsbluff.

“Lisa never relies on easy solutions and simply maintaining the status quo. Instead, she tried to take the time needed to reflect and think about an issue or opportunity so we can use change as an occasion for growth and transformation,” said her nominator.

Muschall said she is honored and humbled to be chosen by her colleagues for this award.

“I am privileged to work with an amazingly talented and forward-thinking group of staff and faculty in the College of Nursing,” she said. “There is a ‘we’re all in this together’ mindset and a willingness to pitch in and support one another, whatever the circumstance. I may be the one to request help from others, but those who step up to do the work deserve all the credit. I could not do my job effectively without the collaborative work of so many who are dedicated to advancing the missions of the college by serving each other, our students and our community partners,” she said.

Muschall also is described as exuding a quiet confidence, and someone who listens carefully to others in a way that engenders trust.

“She shows respect in every encounter,” the nominator said.

Muschall’s nominators also praised her skills in financial analysis, business planning and human resources. Her concern and compassion, they said, is focused — first and foremost — on excellence, safety, quality and caring for nursing’s internal and external constituents.

After the death of a colleague this past year, Muschall helped redistribute the work, train those who were picking up new responsibilities and identify someone who could help on a temporary basis. Said her nominator: “This was a monumental responsibility on top of the grief brought about by a colleague’s passing.”

Colleagues praise Muschall for her support of others and for fostering a culture of growth, learning and leadership development. Said her nominator: “(Lisa) is a uniquely talented individual and a true asset to the College of Nursing and UNMC.”
