Nicole Harter, MD, has been named chief of pediatric dermatology at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center and associate professor and chief, UNMC Division of Pediatric Dermatology in the Department of Dermatology.

As the first full-time pediatric dermatologist at UNMC and Children’s, she will lead the development of a comprehensive specialty dermatology program to improve the lives of children in the region and beyond. She will start on Sept. 1, 2021.

Dr. Harter comes to Omaha from Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA), serving on faculty at University of Southern California. She has served as a full-time academic pediatric dermatologist, focusing on complex medical dermatology, laser treatments and dermatologic surgery. She also served as associate program director of CHLA’s pediatric dermatology fellowship program. Dr. Harter’s research has been widely published in medical literature, as well.

“I could not be more excited about the opportunity to establish and grow a comprehensive pediatric dermatology division with UNMC and Children’s in Omaha,” Dr. Harter said. “I am passionate about bringing exceptional, innovative and compassionate pediatric dermatologic care to the greater region.”

“We are ecstatic that Dr. Harter is joining our leadership team at UNMC and Children’s,” said Ashley Wysong, MD, founding chair of the UNMC Department of Dermatology. “She brings a wealth of experience and clear vision for the pediatric dermatology program. The Midwest region, and the state of Nebraska specifically, has a major shortage of pediatric dermatologists, and we are excited to work closely with Dr. Harter to build the program over the next several years.”

In collaboration with Children’s, the UNMC Department of Dermatology plans to recruit an additional three pediatric dermatologists to the program over the next five years, as well as start an accredited fellowship in pediatric dermatology. “The specialty training in pediatric dermatology will be a phenomenal opportunity for our dermatology, pediatric, family medicine and other medical trainees,” Dr. Wysong said.

“We are delighted to welcome Dr. Harter to UNMC and Children’s as division chief of pediatric dermatology,” said Kari Simonsen, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Pediatrics and pediatrician-in-chief at Children’s. “Historically, Nebraska has had a shortage of fellowship-trained pediatric dermatologists, and we look forward to collaborating in the development of a comprehensive, academic program that will benefit children across the region.”

Dr. Harter attended medical school at the University of Arizona, where she was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha and Gold Humanism Honor Societies and received the Outstanding Senior Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement. She completed her internship in pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, her dermatology residency at Los Angeles County and University of Southern California and her fellowship in pediatric dermatology at Northwestern Medical Center and Lurie Children’s Hospital.
