The UNMC College of Medicine received new grant and funding awards representing $618,915 in new funding in January.

  • Cyrus Desouza, MBBS, internal medicine-DEM, received a grant of $15,000 from the Nebraska Educational Biomedical Research Association for an ICA for Adam Hornig.
  • Ioannis Chatzizisis, MD, internal medicine-cardiovascular, received a grant of $9,963 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for “Ultrasound as Mechanotherapy for Endothelial Cell Dysfunction.”
  • Kyle Hewitt, PhD, genetics, cell biology and anatomy, received a grant of $344,259 from the Department of Health and Human Services for “GATA Factor Mechanisms in Erythroid Regeneration.”
  • Sarah Schlichte, cellular and integrative physiology, received a grant of $36,607 from the Department of Health and Human Services for “Anti-Hypertension Properties of the Antioxidant MnTnBuOE-2-Pyp5+ and Its Nanoformulation.”

  • Laxmi Narayana Buddharaju, MBBS, internal medicine-oncology/hematology, received funding for a clinical trial that will study the efficacy and safety of marrow infiltrating lymphocytes used alongside a novel drug in non small cell lung cancer.
  • John Um, MD, surgery-cardiothoracic surgery, received funding for “Implantation of the HeartMate 3 in Subjects with Heart Failure Using Surgical Techniques Other Than Full Median Sternotomy.”
