Take Care 101: Don’t forget to breathe

Even the busiest among us have moments each day for a reinvigorating break — minutes that help us reconnect with ourselves and “just breathe.” Mindful meditation — even in short bursts — can reduce your heart rate, blood pressure and stress level.

The good news is these “micropractices’ can be done anywhere and at anytime — on Zoom calls, between patient visits, while driving a car, folding laundry or standing in the check-out line. They are yet another tool in your “Take Care” wellness toolkit and work alongside the tools identified earlier by the UNMC Campus Wellness team: practicing gratitude, exercising, avoiding doomscrolling, getting enough sleep, laughing and making connections that help you through the toughest days.

Today’s “Take Care” tip: Don’t forget to breathe

The UNMC Campus Wellness team has been known to begin meetings with this calming technique. Inhale through your nose for a count of six. Exhale the same way for the same count. Repeat four times. How do you feel? The practice of slow, deep breathing during a hectic workday can help you stay focused and calm.
