How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC:

My training program is four years long (intern year plus three years of ophthalmology)

What do you like the most about your training program:

We get great surgical experience and the other residents in my program are great.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future?

With private equity becoming more and more involved in specialties, such as ophthalmology and dermatology, the academic programs will have to form relationships with these businesses to provide adequate training to fellows and residents.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

I am proud to be around the amazing doctors that I meet each day at UNMC. It still amazes me that I have made it this far with my education and that I made it to a place at which so many people are invested in my future.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

  • I was a field biologist for 4 years before going to medical school and worked in botany, fisheries, predator biology, and wildlife damage mitigation.
  • My favorite coffee is Archetype Coffee (four shots of espresso with two ounces of steamed milk) — not great prior to microsurgery, though.
  • I grew up on my Dad’s custom harvesting crew and traveled the Midwest harvesting crops every summer and fall with my family.
