What are the greatest rewards of being a mentor?

Seeing junior faculty be successful at reaching their goals — small and large. Supporting junior faculty who are in a difficult situation. Learning from talented young scientists.

Describe a moment in your career when you realized you had picked the right occupation.

I remember both the exhilaration and apprehension of realizing that it was up to me to set my research agenda. My first successes in independent research and obtaining funding assured me I could do this.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a mentor?

I worry that I don’t always provide the right advice!

How do you know when you’ve been successful as a mentor?

It can take different forms. For example, having people seize on opportunities that I have pointed out, having people feel comfortable to confide their difficulties to me, seeing young investigators have more confidence in themselves and be able to “spread their wings” and successfully apply certain skills to their own research programs and independent interactions are ways in which I know I have been successful as a mentor.
