The UNMC College of Nursing is taking applications for recently graduated nurse practitioners, for a residency program.
The residency training exposes recent graduates to a myriad of experiences, which not only allows them to gain proficiency in specialized skills, but also receive support by supervising health professionals.
Residents also will learn skills for working with primary care patients as well as medically complex and socially vulnerable patients and their families.
Called uNParelleled Residency, the program places nurse practitioners specializing in primary care who have graduated within one year from a master’s or doctorate program. In addition to the residency curriculum, residents will receive a full time resident salary and benefits, with the goal being long-term placement in the clinic.
The four community primary care health centers participating in this year’s residency are:
- OneWorld Community Health Center in Omaha;
- Charles Drew Health Center in Omaha;
- Midtown Health Center in Norfolk; and
- Good Neighbor Health Center in Columbus.
All four health centers are seeking a primary care family practice nurse practitioner resident beginning July 1.
“The residency gives them more time, experience, support and specialized training,” said LeAnn Holmes, D.N.P., a nurse practitioner and principal investigator for the grant. “The residency program framework has shown to be effective in helping retain new graduates as well as a way to serve this population.”
The program was funded by a grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration for four years for $1.67 million.
